There is a ton of hype around the metaverse lately. But I think there is a lack of consensus as to what exactly it is. A number of people have asked me whether or not they should invest in it. This is a difficult question to answer given that it is hard to define. The short answer is yes. But there is quite a bit more nuance in the long answer.
In this letter, I’m going to define what the metaverse is, then break down why I think it is worth investing in. Finally, investing in the metaverse is not as difficult as it may seem, so I’ll explain how that is done.
What is the Metaverse?
Metaverse — A virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users. — Oxford Dictionary
I think the Oxford definition is fine, but it doesn’t say much about the metaverses’ relationship with cryptocurrency and ownership. Just like how I think ownership is critical to a pure form of the internet, I think user-based ownership is critical to the metaverse.
As per the definition, I think it’s important that users, and not necessarily companies (as is the case with Meta/Facebook) own the environment, and the user data. As the entire world moves more into the digital (meta) realm, the individual must be in control of their data and have ownership over as much of the metaverse as possible.
This ultimately means that I am more in favour of building the metaverse on technologies that preserve privacy and ownership from an individual’s perspective. This brings me to the next point. The metaverse is not one thing, platform, cryptocurrency, or software. Just like how I believe the universe is a multiverse, the metaverse is a multimetaverse.
